The greatest problem in transplantation medicine is the shortage of organs. To try and overcome this problem, research focuses on two areas: fundamental research, for example on the possibilities of transplanting animal organs (xenotransplantation), artificial organs or reconditioning of organs from deceased donors. Last 50 years of research has rendered some types of cancer curable, but still the major fear factor associated with this disease is unchanged. Animal models are classified according to the method.

Animal experiments in Sweden are subject to approval by an ethics board. A large part of the experimental research is done in test tubes or cell cultures, for example, but it is not yet possible to replace all use of lab animals. Animal experiments are needed, for example, to evaluate if treatments and medicines affect other processes in the body. remember that animal research plays a vital role in understanding animal ill-health, as well. for honest, open debate we need to understand the role of research using animals in medical progress. organisations such as RDS and CMP are crucial, and this report highlighting case studies of important medical advances is most welcome.
